I wanted to post some post some pros and cons for using OpenOffice.org in the enterprise. All testing for this was done with OOo 3.1.
An implementation of OOo would have to include a fair amount of user segmentation for any organization of any size. There are just too many issues that would lead me to say it will work for 100% of the users.
----------------
Autofilter issue - If you hide several rows via Autofilter and then paste or delete data in cells that are still visible, hidden cells are overwritten as well. With Excel, those hidden fields are left untouched.
Excel macros are spotty at best. Calc has some of the functions available but not
all so a lot of macros don't work. These would have to be re-worked.
Setting print area (Format/Print Ranges) and the printng options (File/Page Preview) are in two different locations in Open Office, while in Excel these can both be set in Page Setup.
Pro - Calc supports up to 1024 columns per sheet, while Excel is limited to 256 columns.
Con - Workbook sharing does not work with .xls files. The spreadsheet must be in Open Document format (.ods) and therefore all users need to open the file with Open Office.
Impress (PowerPoint)
Some formatting compatibility with Powerpoint. Specifically text in tables don't wrap well and look bad.
Writer (Word)
Like Impress, there are some issues with formatting. Some files with tables don't center or maintain the same position on the page.
Pro - Open Office can open Word .docx files from the Office 2007/2008 suite natively, while Word 2003 cannot.
All
Doesn't have a "Notify When Available" function if a
file is open by another user.
Cross-platform file locking across office suites doesn't work. If I have a file open in Excel on Windows and try to open the same file on a Mac in OO, it doesn't stop me. Same platform or same office suite works just fine. If we all used OOo, no problem.
Need to be able to set the default file formats to use .doc, .xls, .ppt instead of .odf, and to disable the prompt that requests confirmation of the file format every time the file is saved.
Need to be able to specify a Java version to use, or install the version that includes JRE
